Fruit of the Spirit: Galatians 5:22-23

Ephesians 6:

The Armor of God

Eph 6:10 Finally, be strong in the Lord s and in his mighty power.
Eph 6:11 Put on the full armor of God u so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.
Eph 6:12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
Eph 6:13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.
Eph 6:14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, a with the breastplate of righteousness in place,
Eph 6:15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.
Eph 6:16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.
Eph 6:17 Take the helmet of salvation f and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
Eph 6:18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.
Eph 6:19 Pray also for me, that whenever I open my mouth, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel,
Eph 6:20 for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.

What Is A Deacon?

What is a deacon?  Vine writes, "primarily denotes a servant, whether doing servile work, or as an attendant rendering free service, without a particular reference to its character."   Thayer writes, "one who executes the command of another, a servant, an attendant, minister."

Of course, all of us are to be servants of Christ, but deacons are distinguished from the rest of us (Phi. 1:1).  Just as the men selected to distribute food to widows allowed the apostles to give themselves to prayer and the ministry of the word (Acts 6:1-7).  The service that deacons provide allows the elders to concentrate on shepherding the church.  Reliable and responsible deacons are of great benefit to the work and growth of the church.  Without them the church suffers and the work is hindered.

Like bishops, deacons must meet certain qualifications:

Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre; Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience. And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless. Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things. Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. For they that have used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.(I Tim. 3:8-13 KJV)

It is clear from these qualifications that the role of deacon is important and not left to just any member of the congregation.  Now, God has not left it up to us to decide what kind of a man should be deacon.  God doesn't ask us to look at business expertise, level of education, popularity or the amount of money one has.   The important question is what kind of man is he?  God only wants one kind of man-a servant!

The church of Christ is a servant church.   The bottom line in all church work is ministry.  Deacons epitomize ministry.   Deacons are critical.  To err here is to doom the church.

It is a mistake to think of Deacons as “overseers” of anything in the local church. They are under the same oversight as a preacher, evangelist, teacher, or any member of the local church.

Why you should not skip church!

A country preacher decided to skip services one Sunday and head to the hills to do some bear hunting. As he rounded the corner on a dangerous twist in the trail, he and a bear collided, sending him and his rifle tumbling down the mountainside.

Before he knew it, his rifle went one way and he went the other, landing on a rock and breaking both legs. That was the good news. The bad news was the ferocious bear charging at him from a distance, and he couldn't move.

"Oh Lord," the preacher prayed, "I'm so sorry for skipping services today to come out here and hunt. Please forgive me and grant me just one wish.... please make a Christian out of that bear that's coming at me. Please, Lord!"

That very instant, the bear skidded to a halt, fell to its knees, clasped its paws together and began to pray aloud right at the preacher's feet.

"Dear Lord, bless this food I am about to receive... in Jesus' name... Amen."
